The Multidisciplinary Training Laboratory for Technological Research (LEMIT) of the Scientific Investigations Commission (CIC) is developing a self-construction home system based on 'ecoblocks', blocks that use recycled plastics. This project has been selected in the Buenos Aires Technological Innovation Fund (FITBA) call, Stage 3.
The 'ecoblocks' emerged from the initiative of the company Rentor SRL in 2019, proposing a solution for non-reusable plastic waste that often ends up in garbage dumps. These blocks aim to provide an accessible construction alternative, addressing both the plastic issue and the housing deficit in vulnerable areas.
Architect Mariana López, a member of LEMIT and project director, mentioned that 'ecoblocks' resemble conventional concrete blocks, but with the stone replaced by recycled plastic. In addition, a prototype for a single-story modular home is being designed, with the possibility of expansion.
According to data from the CIC, the housing deficit in Argentina ranges between three and five million homes, with about half concentrated in the Province of Buenos Aires. This project not only seeks to offer affordable housing solutions but also to promote job training in the fields of recycling and construction, thus contributing to a more sustainable circular economy.
